  • GSH Gets Down to Business: Z-Terra High Resolution, Wide Azimuth Tomography and Beam Tomography for Velocity Model Building November 2, 2022

    The Z-Terra implementation of wide azimuth Beam Tomography is based on the Fast Beam Migration (FBM) algorithm. The Beam Tomography uses FBM to directly output a set of image points (x,y,z) with velocity update values, which bypasses the time consuming steps required for traditional tomography, including preparing the gathers for semblance analysis, semblance picking and back-projection picks QC. A 2000 sq km velocity model can be updated using 400 CPUs in less than 5 minutes. The Beam Tomography output contains image point azimuth information and this allows the tomographic update to go beyond the current limitation of limited wide azimuth velocity updates.

    Beam Tomography allows for faster turnaround time for large 3-D seismic projects and at the same time increases the accuracy of the velocity model by using wide azimuth information that is typically unavailable in traditional tomography. Beam Tomography can be combined with Full Waveform Inversion (FWI) to speed up the convergence and obtain high resolution velocity models 10 to 100 times faster than the standard practice. While FWI is typically implemented in data space, FWI can also be implemented in image space, without the long offset and low frequency constraints of FWI in data space.

  • Advances in Land Seismic Data Processing: Continuing the Conversation – June 28-30, 2022 May 5, 2022

    Z-Terra’s CEO and Chairman Mihai Popovici is one of the organizers of the “Advances in Land Seismic Data Processing: Continuing the Conversation” workshop on June 28-30, 2022 in Al Khobar, Saudi Arabia.  The event overview is below:

    Following the successful land processing workshop held in 2018 in Kuwait, this upcoming meeting aims to share updated practices and new advancements in land seismic data processing, both in terms of maximizing the value of legacy data and promoting advances in data acquisition technologies such as increased number of channels, novel source technologies, full azimuth, long offset, broadband, and nodal systems. Current issues affecting onshore seismic data, processing workflows, and existing limitations will be discussed. The technologies that utilize entire wave-field are of particular interest.

    Use of passive seismic and non-seismic data to enhance and complement land seismic data processing for imaging and sub-surface monitoring is certainly a related area of interest. Due to the increase in data volumes recorded on land, another relevant topic for the workshop is the use of Machine Learning (ML) in QC of very large data sets and in processing workflow to enhance quality and efficiency in order to expedite decision-making.

    Geoscientists with varying backgrounds will have the opportunity to exchange ideas, share their experiences, network with their colleagues, and learn new techniques. The workshop will cover associated theories and applications as well as case studies on land data. This will highlight ways in which we can maximize information and value from seismic data.

  • High-Tech Low-Tech – The Curmudgeon’s Column June 23, 2021

    An old Silicon Valley mantra postulates that money is not in technology but in the business application of technology.

    When I posted in LinkedIn a link to my Geophysical Society of Houston Technical Lunch in order to generate some publicity for my talk on Beam Tomography, one of the interesting comments from a colleague at a large service company was that Beam Technology is “a technology with many benefits that unfortunately is commonly regarded as old school / low tech.” I loved the comment because it allows me to talk about one of my favorite business concepts that I always look around to apply, and that is High-Tech Low-Tech. High-Tech is a term for new technology that incorporates advanced features. Low-Tech is the old school technology. I’ll start with an example, the story of the Nest thermostat.
